Barry Williams (Greg Brady) for AOPA mag

With the holidays and then Ecuador I fell a bit behind in updating my tearsheets (published work).  Here’s the charming Barry Williams, who’ll be forever known as Greg Brady. Photographed last Fall for AOPA Flight Training, a focused aviation magazine that goes out to hundreds of thousands of aviation buffs and pilots. Earlier I posted some behind-the-scenes.

Barry Williams (Greg Brady) for AOPA magazine

“Greg Brady” aka Barry Williams for AOPA magazine

I have not seen an episode of The Brady Bunch in a long, long time.  But I do remember watching it on the tube every week as a kid.

Last Friday morning I met the oldest of the Brady Boys, “Greg”, in a hangar down in Long Beach to photograph him for AOPA magazine.  AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) publishes the world’s largest circulation aviation magazine and Barry Williams is a fairly serious aviator these days.

Barry was great to work with; big smile, easygoing and loved to talk about flying. With the OK from the Art Director here are a few images that don’t give away the “money shot” that they’ll publish as a full page profile in a few months.  I’ll share that when it’s out in AOPA’s Flight Training magazine.

The first is behind-the-scenes during a quiet coffee break.  The second is one of a series of frames taken with natural light after I got the shot we wanted.  That’s the best part of any shoot: after the image you set out for is “in the bag” it’s time to play  – sometimes those images are the ones that really stand out.

8 page spread in a dirty magazine

Just out this week: the August issue of Trail Runner magazine which has an eight page feature we shot this spring. It was an epic shoot filled with storms, mudslides, closed roads: everything you could hope for.  I wrote about the behind-the-scenes a few months ago.  We had great runners and great times (Sarah here is a Major in the Air Force, relocating to the Pentagon next week).  This is the opening spread:

Naked Runners, McRunner…for Runner’s World

haha :-) just found that the portrait I shot on assignment for Runner’s World magazine is sharing the page with a story on naked runners. (click the page to expand to the full page).

That’s Joe D’Amico on the right, I picked him up at the hotel in LA early so we could get to the start and have some time to shoot as well as make sure I didn’t lose him as the broadcast media also wanted interviews. He had subsisted on only calories from McDonalds the previous 30 days as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House.  We shot our series of portraits at dawn and then after TV interviews he stepped to the front of the marathon line. There were a brief few moments when I had the chance to pull the EggMc Muffin from my pocket. I ran up and handed it to him, stepping back to get the shot. My favorite part of the image is the reaction on the faces of those around him!

He ran a blazing fast marathon: 2 hours 36 minutes.  In record-setting torrential  rainfall that came pouring down just after the starting gun.  Joe was great to hang out with – here he is approaching the finish line (click for larger).  $27,000 was raised for Ronald McDonald House.  Congrats, Joe!

Six page feature in Spring Nikon World magazine

Nikon makes great gear  – I’ve used it for 20 years now – and I’m pleased to be featured in the current issue of Nikon World magazine.  The six page piece explores my use of space and people within typically wide compositions.  The opening spread is the image below, one of my favorites…

The magazine has shipped but their online edition and website is not updated yet, I’ll include a link when that’s ready. An added feature online is an audio interview as I talk through the images and techniques.

Here’s an excerpt from the mag:

“I started off in photography by documenting my climbing adventures,” Kevin says, “and I learned to shoot fairly wide to show the relationship of the person to the surroundings; you have to open up your vision to include the environment and capture the feeling of space around you.”

Happy People of San Luis Obispo: portraits for Delta’s in-flight magazine

In the seat back pockets on all Delta Airline flights this month (January) is a short feature story on the “Happiest Places in the World”.

The story is about the subject of happiness and how it exists within particular communities.  It is is an excerpt from a new National Geographic book “Thrive” written by bestselling author Dan Buettner in which he profiles four cities on the globe that through his research he has deemed the happiest places in the world. San Luis Obispo,California is one of these. The others are in Denmark, Singapore and Mexico.

I spent three days on assignment in SLO a few months ago immersing myself in the happy vibe with truly happy people to create a series of tight, authentic portraits. A total of 64 portraits: from the mayor to the homeless and all walks of life in between.  Here are 16 of them:

“Rave Run” Spread in December Runner’s World magazine

Out on newsstands this week, Jenn Dedoes shows what running in Santa Barbara is all about.

“Rolling, sandy trails thread through the bluffs at Campus Point, located on the grounds of the University of California, Santa Barbara.  The cliffs overlook the Pacific Ocean, where runners often spot dolphins and, depending on the waves, surfers stretching out the late afternoon.  Also, says Dedoes. “It’s a phenomenal place to see a sunset.”
