Oceans 19

19 months ago, actually. I came across this today as I was editing images and although this didn’t make the cut back then I’m thinking I like it even more now than I did the original select.  A little darker and more mysterious – fitting for the cold waters in February.  In the time since, btw, Jenn met a man, married, had a baby girl and can still easily swim circles around me.

“Rave Run” Spread in December Runner’s World magazine

Out on newsstands this week, Jenn Dedoes shows what running in Santa Barbara is all about.

“Rolling, sandy trails thread through the bluffs at Campus Point, located on the grounds of the University of California, Santa Barbara.  The cliffs overlook the Pacific Ocean, where runners often spot dolphins and, depending on the waves, surfers stretching out the late afternoon.  Also, says Dedoes. “It’s a phenomenal place to see a sunset.”

Santa Barbara Triathlon

I was in the water at 7am with the D3 in a housing to get some close shots of the 2000+ athletes (always aware to stay out of the way!) at the start of the 1 mile swim, then the transition to the 34 mile bike and finally the 10 mile run…I was shooting for practice and portfolio – if you were in the triathlon and are wondering if I caught you – drop me an email; there are many more images than the ones in the gallery links here:

Here is a gallery of images from the long course triathlon.
And a gallery of  images from the sprint course triathlon.

Jenn on the beach

A series from yesterday evening with great clouds that were out of place in our usual summer weather  – Jenn’s a triathlete and training for a 50 mile  ultramarathon. She is also the girl with the peacock feathers in her hair a few posts below.  The unusual clouds brought double rainbows which of course brought dolphins leaping offshore to complete the magic.  High tide at 8PM came right to the bluffs, chasing us off the sand.  Shot with the D3, lit with a Profoto beauty dish from an Acute 600BR pack.

A Busy Month

The past weeks have been a whirlwind of shoots, inspirations, friends, family…LA, SF, Denver, Boulder, Yosemite.  Images below are from Saturday’s Blue Canyon Trail Race. I pulled in from Yosemite after 10pm, threw the bag on the start line and then woke up to shoot pre-race portraits of the 100km runners at 4am.  The post-race portrait below is of men’s winners Andrew Crenshaw on the right (100km ) and Brooks Williams (50 miler). Looking good despite race temps over 100 degrees!
